Definition of Plagiarism

Plagiarism is defined as the use of another individual’s ideas, words, data, or findings without proper acknowledgment, thereby presenting them as one’s own. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Direct Plagiarism — Verbatim copying of text from another source without appropriate citation.

  • Self-Plagiarism (Redundant Publication) — Reuse of substantial portions of one’s previously published work without proper acknowledgment or citation.

  • Mosaic Plagiarism — Paraphrasing or borrowing phrases from a source without proper attribution while maintaining the original structure or meaning.

  • Accidental Plagiarism — Failure to appropriately cite sources due to oversight, negligence, or misunderstanding of citation standards.

Plagiarism Detection and Screening

  • Initial Screening — All submitted manuscripts are evaluated using advanced plagiarism detection software prior to peer review.

  • Editorial Assessment — Manuscripts flagged for similarity are reviewed by the editorial team to determine the nature and extent of overlap.

  • Author Notification — Authors may be required to provide clarification, revise the manuscript, or address identified concerns before further consideration.

Editorial Action and Consequences

IJCHMD follows a strict zero-tolerance policy toward plagiarism:

  • Minor Overlap — Manuscripts with limited overlap may be returned to authors for revision and proper citation.

  • Moderate to Significant Plagiarism — Manuscripts containing substantial unattributed material will be rejected without further review.

  • Self-Plagiarism — Duplicate or redundant publications without disclosure will be declined.

  • Post-Publication Violations — If plagiarism is identified after publication:

    • The article will be formally retracted

    • A retraction notice will be issued

    • The authors may be subject to a submission ban at the discretion of the editorial board

All actions are carried out in accordance with the principles and guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), and the Open Access Scholarly Publishing Association (OASPA).
